Moving to the UK from the US: is it illegal to bring old US license plates into the UK?

So, I have a few of my father's old license plates from various states in the US (plus a dozen more in storage that I would like to bring in later) that I would like to bring with me when I move to the UK (England) on my spouse visa. Is that illegal to do?I know it looks odd on the surface, but I have used them as decoration in my homes since my father died 14 years ago. Could I be able to explain it that way, or should I just avoid the hassle? It's not like they could be used on a car in the UK anyway, so even though it may be illegal to hold onto them in the US, I don't see why the UK authorities would care too much.
