I bought a Walter plush…and my dog hates it

TL;DR: Walter plushes are fantastic! Go buy one now!!I discovered Steve’s comedy recently during this COVID tragedy, and it has helped me laugh a little during what is a pretty sucky time for the world. Saw a couple of his clips where he talked about his dog Walter, and a few of the clips even have Walter in the outro (he seemed to like staring at the headboard of the bed in that hotel room a lot…?), so I did a Google search to find more about Walter because dogs are the best. I then came across Steve’s last Daily Walter. The post really hit home for me because I have a Staffy mix who just turned 13 and has started having health problems (nothing close to Walter yet, thank goodness). It was a sobering reminder of what “forever home” means.Anyway, I was clicking around at the merch on Steve’s Web site and saw the Walter plush. Thought Walter would be a great addition to decorate a bookshelf in my house. And it benefits a rescue shelter. Awesome! Thought the price was a bit steep for a small plush toy, but Steve’s gotta eat, and it benefits a good cause, so, I’m in. Box arrives a few weeks later—a much larger box than I was expecting—and lo and behold, it’s not just a plush, it’s a near-life-sized plush of Walter. Whoops, not a bookshelf decoration after all. And that explains the price a lot more. Plus, super-high quality plush toy—very soft, and looks quite a bit like Steve’s “lil potato.” Maybe too much like him. Regardless, very cool, I’m super happy. Totally worth it.I leave Walter on a desk I have in my living room since I now need to find a good spot for Walter to hang out in my house. Didn’t think anything of it, but about 15 minutes later, I notice my dog standing and staring at the plush from a safe distance, eyeing it carefully. She clearly doesn’t know what to make of this dog-looking-thing. Plush Walter is realistic enough where my dog thought it was an actual dog, but is genuinely terrified of it because 1) it doesn’t move, and 2) it doesn’t smell like an actual dog. It’s this weird non-dog-smelling dog thing. WTF.I try to introduce my dog to Walter, but she is not having any of it. Barks at him a couple of times (she never barks), and when Walter falls over on the floor she jumps back startled and runs away. The evil dog-looking thing moves on it’s own! Nooooo!! Now she won’t go anywhere near the living room when Walter is there. So instead, Walter hangs out in my home office, keeping me company during the day, while my dog sleeps on my bed in another room, safe from the horrible plush Walterbeast. Still, I’d like to think that Walter and my dog would have been BFFs in real life, had they ever met. Even if his plush version is a demon that my dog can’t understand.Anyway, this is just a note to say thanks to Steve for the comedy and doing all the other cool stuff you do (like adopt senior dogs and raise money for shelters and offer scholarships and aid to aspiring comedians). Can’t wait to see you at the Improv in Kansas City in May. And congrats on adopting your recent tiny fur-cow Milton! I wish you both many happy wags together.
